ۖ ۖ ۖ ۗ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الْمَلَإِ مِن بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِن بَعْدِ مُوسَى إِذْ قَالُوا لِنَبِيٍّ لَّهُمُ ابْعَثْ لَنَا مَلِكًا نُّقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ هَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِتَالُ أَلَّا تُقَاتِلُوا قَالُوا وَمَا لَنَا أَلَّا نُقَاتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَقَدْ أُخْرِجْنَا مِن دِيَارِنَا وَأَبْنَائِنَا فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقِتَالُ تَوَلَّوْا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنْهُمْ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّالِمِينَ

they said
لِنَبِيٍّ
linabiyyin
to a Prophet
لَّهُمُ
lahumu
of theirs
ابْعَثْ
ib'ath
Appoint
لَنَا
lana
for us
مَلِكًا
malikan
a king
نُّقَاتِلْ
nuqatil
we may fight
فِي
fi
in
سَبِيلِ
sabili
(the) way
اللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
قَالَ
qala
He said
هَلْ
hal
Would
عَسَيْتُمْ
asaytum
you perhaps
إِن
in
if
كُتِبَ
kutiba
prescribed
عَلَيْكُمُ
alaykumu
upon you
الْقِتَالُ
al-qitalu
[the] fighting
أَلَّا
alla
that not
تُقَاتِلُوا
tuqatilu
you fight
قَالُوا
qalu
They said
وَمَا
wama
And what
لَنَا
lana
for us
أَلَّا
alla
that not
نُقَاتِلَ
nuqatila
we fight
فِي
fi
in
سَبِيلِ
sabili
(the) way
اللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
وَقَدْ
waqad
while surely
أُخْرِجْنَا
ukh'rij'na
we have been driven out
مِن
min
from
دِيَارِنَا
diyarina
our homes
وَأَبْنَائِنَا
wa-abnaina
and our children
فَلَمَّا
falamma
Yet, when
كُتِبَ
kutiba
was prescribed
عَلَيْهِمُ
alayhimu
upon them
الْقِتَالُ
al-qitalu
the fighting
تَوَلَّوْا
tawallaw
they turned away
إِلَّا
illa
except
قَلِيلًا
qalilan
a few
مِّنْهُمْ
min'hum
among them
وَاللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
عَلِيمٌ
alimun
(is) All-Knowing
بِالظَّالِمِينَ
bil-zalimina
of the wrongdoers
