The principle: prayer + dua together
In Islam, voluntary (nafl) prayers are a way to draw closer to Allah and to "present" your request with humility. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that when we want guidance or a decision, we should pray two units of prayer *and then* make a specific dua. The dua of Istikharah is the clearest example. Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet ﷺ would teach them Istikharah for all their affairs, just as he would teach them a chapter of the Quran. He ﷺ said: if any of you intends to undertake a matter, let him pray two supererogatory units (two rakah nafl) and then supplicate:

O Allah, if You know this affair to be good for me in relation to my religion, my life, and end, then decree and facilitate it for me, and bless me with it, and if You know this affair to be ill for me... then remove it from me and remove me from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it be and make me satisfied with such."* [Dua: Supplication for seeking guidance — Al-Istikharah, dua_26]
