What is Dua in Islam?

Dua (supplication) is the act of turning to Allah through asking, requesting, and humbling oneself. It is one of the greatest acts of worship in Islam. Allah says: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." (Surah Ghafir, 40:60). Dua is the very essence of worship, as the Prophet ๏ทบ said (Tirmidhi), because it demonstrates the servant's need for their Lord and acknowledgment of Allah's absolute power. Dua is a direct dialogue between the servant and the Creator, requiring no intermediary or intercessor, for Allah is near โ€” He hears and responds. Allah says: "And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when they call upon Me." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:186). Dua encompasses asking for the good of this world and the hereafter, seeking protection from all evil, and praising and glorifying Allah. Abandoning dua is a sign of arrogance and heedlessness, as Allah says: "Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell rendered contemptible." (Surah Ghafir, 40:60).

The Etiquette of Making Dua

Dua has etiquette that is recommended to observe so that the supplication is more likely to be answered. Among the most important: facing the Qibla and raising the hands, as the Prophet ๏ทบ would raise his hands in supplication until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen (Bukhari). Beginning with praise of Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet ๏ทบ before making the request: the Prophet ๏ทบ said: "When one of you prays, let him begin by praising Allah and glorifying Him, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet ๏ทบ, then let him ask for whatever he wishes." (Tirmidhi). Being sincere in dua and having certainty of the response, persisting in supplication without being hasty. Ensuring that one's food, drink, and clothing are lawful, as the Prophet ๏ทบ mentioned the man who stretches out his hands to the sky supplicating while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and he was nourished with the unlawful โ€” how then could he be answered? (Muslim). It is also recommended to invoke Allah by His beautiful Names and exalted attributes.

Best Times for Dua

There are times and situations when dua is more likely to be answered. Among the greatest: the last third of the night โ€” the Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains and says: Who will call upon Me so I may answer? Who will ask of Me so I may give? Who will seek My forgiveness so I may forgive?" (Bukhari and Muslim). Between the adhan and iqama: the Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The dua between the adhan and iqama is not rejected." (Abu Dawud). At the time of breaking the fast: the Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Three supplications are not rejected: the supplication of the fasting person until they break their fast, the supplication of the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed." (Tirmidhi). During rainfall, and on Friday there is an hour during which a Muslim servant who asks Allah for something will be granted it (Bukhari and Muslim). During prostration: the Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The closest a servant is to their Lord is when they are in prostration, so increase your supplications therein." (Muslim). Also during the Night of Decree, when drinking Zamzam water, and on the Day of Arafat.

Categories of Duas

Duas in Islam fall into several categories. Quranic duas: those mentioned in the Quran on the tongues of prophets and the righteous, such as Ibrahim's supplication: "Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good and in the hereafter that which is good, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:201). Prophetic duas: those reported from the Prophet ๏ทบ in the authentic Sunnah, which are very numerous and cover all situations and occasions of a Muslim. Daily adhkar: including morning and evening remembrances, post-prayer supplications, sleep and waking supplications, entering and leaving the home, eating, traveling, and many others. Personal duas: what a Muslim asks of their Lord in their own language and according to their needs, for the door of dua is open and it is permissible to supplicate in any language and in any form, as long as it does not contain sin or severing of family ties.

Why Dua May Not Be Answered?

It is important to understand that Allah responds to every dua, but the response comes in one of three forms, as the Prophet ๏ทบ explained: "There is no Muslim who makes a supplication containing no sin or severing of family ties except that Allah grants them one of three things: either their request is fulfilled immediately, or it is stored for them in the hereafter, or an equivalent evil is averted from them." (Ahmad). Therefore, a Muslim must be patient and not be hasty. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The supplication of one of you is answered as long as they do not become impatient, saying: I have supplicated and have not been answered." (Bukhari and Muslim). Among the reasons for non-response: consuming unlawful food or money, heedlessness and lack of sincerity in supplication, and making a dua containing sin or severing of family ties. But a Muslim should know that Allah is the Most Wise and Most Knowing, and He may withhold something that appears good on the surface but is actually harmful, as Allah says: "Perhaps you may dislike something which is good for you." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:216).

Essential Duas Every Muslim Should Know

There are Prophetic supplications that every Muslim should memorize and practice regularly. Among the most important: the dua "Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the hereafter," which was the most frequent dua of the Prophet ๏ทบ. The supplication of Yunus (Jonah): "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:87) โ€” the Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The supplication of Dhun-Nun when he called out from the belly of the whale... no Muslim has ever said it for anything except that Allah answered them." (Tirmidhi). The dua for parents: "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small." (Surah Al-Isra, 17:24). The master supplication for forgiveness (Sayyid al-Istighfar): "O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity but You, You created me and I am Your servant..." (Bukhari). The Istikhara dua for decision-making. The dua for entering and leaving the mosque, the dua for traveling, and the dua for wearing new clothing. Memorizing these supplications and practicing them regularly protects the Muslim, brings them closer to Allah, and fills their life with blessings.
