The Fajr prayer is the dawn prayer — it consists of 2 obligatory rak'ahs (units of prayer), and it is prayed after the true dawn appears and before the sun rises. It is one of the most blessed prayers of the day, and the Quran itself singles out its recitation for special mention.
The Steps of the Fajr Prayer
1. Make sure the time has entered. Fajr begins at the *true dawn* (al-fajr al-ṣādiq) — the horizontal white light spreading across the horizon — and ends at sunrise. The Prophet ﷺ distinguished between two dawns: the "false dawn" (a vertical light like a wolf's tail, which does not start the prayer time) and the "true dawn" (which spreads across the horizon and marks the start of Fajr) [Source 7 — Hadith: "There are two Fajrs..."].
2. Purify yourself (wudu) and face the Qibla.
3. Pray 2 rak'ahs as the obligatory (fard) prayer, following the normal structure: takbir, recitation of Al-Fatihah and another surah, rukū', sujūd, and so on.
4. The time is generous but short. If you wake up late, don't despair — the Prophet ﷺ said: *"Whoever catches one rak'ah before sunrise has caught the Fajr prayer"* [Source 9 — Sahih Bukhari & Muslim]. So if you catch even one rak'ah before sunrise, you have prayed Fajr in its time.
The Two Sunnah Rak'ahs Before Fajr
This is a beautiful detail many people overlook: the Prophet ﷺ used to pray 2 short sunnah rak'ahs before the obligatory Fajr, and he was more consistent with these than with any other voluntary prayer.
ʿĀ'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: *"The Prophet ﷺ did not observe a voluntary prayer more regularly than the two rak'ahs of Fajr"* — and in another narration, *"the two rak'ahs of Fajr are better than this world and all it contains"* [Source 10 — Sahih Bukhari & Muslim].
He would pray them after the dawn broke and after the adhan, and he would make them brief [Source 5 — Sahih Bukhari; Source 6 — Sahih Bukhari & Muslim].
A Beautiful Sunnah After the Prayer
After finishing Fajr, the Prophet ﷺ would remain seated in his prayer spot until the sun rose [Source 4 — Sahih Muslim]. This is a precious time for dhikr, Quran recitation, and morning supplications.
