What the surah is about
The surah opens with a powerful scene: the Day of Judgment is described as an inevitable event that will definitely come to pass. When it happens, it will bring down some people and raise others — meaning it will humble the arrogant and elevate the righteous.
> "When the Event inevitable cometh to pass" [Coran, Al-Waaqia:1]
> "It abaissera (les uns), il élèvera (les autres)" [Coran, Al-Waaqia:3]
The surah then divides humanity into three groups: those closest to Allah (the foremost in faith), the people of the right hand (ordinary believers), and the people of the left hand (the disbelievers and hypocrites). It describes in vivid detail the rewards of Paradise — gardens, springs, fruits, and companions "like well-guarded pearls" [Coran, Al-Waaqia:23] — and the punishments of Hell, including "the shade of black smoke" [Coran, Al-Waaqia:43].
The status of the Quran
A central theme of this surah is the nobility and divine origin of the Quran itself. Allah ﷻ swears by the Quran and declares it to be a noble revelation, preserved in a well-guarded Book, sent down from the Lord of the Worlds.
