The Prophet ﷺ himself confirmed its unique status. When he asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) which verse of Allah's Book was the greatest, Ubayy answered that it was Ayat al-Kursi, and the Prophet ﷺ struck his chest and said: "May knowledge be pleasant for you, O Abu al-Mundhir!" [Sahih Muslim 810]
The verse begins with the declaration of Allah's oneness and goes on to describe His attributes:
"Allah! There is no god but He, the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permits? He knows what appears to His creatures as before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass anything of His knowledge except as He wills. His Throne (Kursi) extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them, for He is the Most High, the Supreme." [Quran, Al-Baqarah 2:255]
A few important points about this verse:
Its meaning: The verse teaches pure monotheism (tawhid). It affirms that Allah alone is worthy of worship, that He is ever-living and sustains all creation, that He never sleeps or tires, that all things belong to Him, and that His knowledge encompasses everything. The "Kursi" (often translated as "Throne" or "Footstool") is a created thing that extends over the heavens and the earth — a sign of Allah's immense power.
The Kursi and the 'Arsh: It is important to distinguish between the Kursi and the 'Arsh (the Great Throne). Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Kursi is the resting place of the two Feet, and the size of the 'Arsh no one can estimate." [Ibn Khuzaymah, At-Tawheed] And the Prophet ﷺ said that compared to the 'Arsh, the Kursi is like a small iron ring thrown into a vast desert. [Ibn Abi Shaybah, Al-'Arsh]
Its great reward: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites the Verse of the Kursi right after each obligatory prayer will have nothing preventing him from entering Paradise except that he dies." [An-Nasa'i, As-Sunan al-Kubra 9848]
A practical tip: Make it a habit to recite Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, and also before sleeping. You can find the full verse with its translation and recitation in the Quran section of your Al Muslim Plus app — open Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 255, and try to memorize it gradually. It is short, powerful, and a means of great reward.
