The Prophet ﷺ himself confirmed its unique status. When he asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) which verse of Allah's Book was the greatest, Ubayy answered with Ayat al-Kursi. The Prophet ﷺ then struck his chest and said: "May knowledge be pleasant for you, O Abu al-Mundhir!" [Sahih Muslim 810]
The verse begins with the fundamental truth of Tawhid:
اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ
"Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence." [Quran 2:255]
It then describes Allah's perfection: neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him, everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, no one can intercede without His permission, and His knowledge encompasses all things. His Kursi (Footstool) extends over the heavens and the earth, and guarding them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great.
What is the Kursi?
The Kursi is a created entity, distinct from the 'Arsh (the Throne). Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Kursi is the resting place of the two Feet, and the Throne — no one can estimate its true measure." [Source 1]
The Prophet ﷺ also explained the vast difference in size between them: "The Kursi compared to the Throne is like an iron ring thrown into a desert on earth." [Source 3] This shows us how immense the Throne of Allah is — far beyond our comprehension.
Its great significance and reward:
The most beautiful promise connected to this verse is that reciting it after every obligatory prayer is a means of entering Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites the Verse of the Kursi right after each obligatory prayer will have nothing preventing him from entering Paradise except that he dies." [Source 2 — narrated by An-Nasa'i in Al-Kubra, authentic]
So the only thing standing between such a person and Paradise is the natural end of their life — meaning they are guaranteed Jannah, by Allah's grace.
