The Prophet ﷺ himself confirmed its greatness. When he asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) which verse of Allah's Book was the greatest, Ubayy answered that it was Ayat al-Kursi, and the Prophet ﷺ struck his chest and said, "May knowledge be pleasant for you, O Abu al-Mundhir!" [Sahih Muslim 810]
What the verse teaches us
The verse begins with the core of our faith: "Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence." It then describes Allah's perfection: He never tires or sleeps, everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, no one can intercede without His permission, and His knowledge encompasses all things past and future. His Kursi (Footstool) extends over the heavens and the earth, and guarding them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great. [Coran, Al-Baqara:255]
The meaning of "Al-Kursi"
The Kursi is not the same as the Throne (Al-'Arsh). Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) explained that the Kursi is the resting place of the two Feet, while the Throne is so vast that no one can estimate its true size. [Source 2, ID 10950/6330] The Prophet ﷺ also told us that compared to the Throne, the Kursi is like a small iron ring thrown into a vast desert — showing us how infinitely great Allah's creation is, and how much greater the Creator Himself is. Its immense reward
The greatest practical significance of Ayat al-Kursi is the promise attached to reciting it after each obligatory prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites the Verse of the Kursi right after each obligatory prayer will have nothing preventing him from entering Paradise except that he dies." [Source 1, ID 10950] In other words, whoever is consistent in this practice will enter Paradise as soon as they pass away.
A practical tip
Make it a habit to recite Ayat al-Kursi immediately after every obligatory prayer — before you get up or start other dhikr. You can read it directly from the Quran section in your Al Muslim Plus app to memorize it properly, and you can also find it among the recommended remembrances in the Invocations section of your app. It is short, but its reward is enormous.
