Waking up is a new beginning granted by Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us to thank Allah for giving us life back after sleep.
Sleep: a small death
The Prophet (peace be upon him) compared sleep to a small death. When we fall asleep, Allah takes our souls, and when He wakes us, He returns them. The supplication upon waking is therefore a thanksgiving for this new life granted.
