We were with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey on a very dark night and we didn't know the direction of the Qiblah. So each man among us prayed in his own direction. In the morning, when we mentioned that to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) the following verse was revealed: {So wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah} [Sūrat al-Baqarah: 115]
عن عامر بن رَبِيعة رضي الله عنه قال: كنَّا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في سَفَر في لَيلة مُظْلِمَةٍ، فلم نَدْرِ أين القِبْلَة، فصلى كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنَّا على حِيَالِه، فلمَّا أَصْبَحْنَا ذَكرنا ذلك للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ، فنزل: ﴿فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله﴾ [البقرة: 115].
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was with his companions on a journey on a very dark night, and they were not sure where the direction of the Qiblah was. So all of them prayed in their own direction. When they woke up in the morning and found that they prayed to a direction other than the Qiblah, they mentioned that to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).
At this point, Allah, the Almighty, revealed this verse to him: {And to Allah belongs the east and the west. So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah.} [Sūrat al-Baqarah: 115]
