Trim the mustaches and let the beards grow
عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «أحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ وأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى».
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) enjoins that the mustache should be trimmed and not be left to grow; rather, it should be cut, and this should be done to a great extent. On the other hand, he enjoins that the beard should be left to grow long.
