Let me explain this beautiful verse in a simple way. Ayat al-Kursi begins by affirming that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and describes Him as Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living) and Al-Qayyum (The Self-Subsisting, the One upon whom all creation depends). It then tells us that neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him, and that everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. No one can intercede with Him except by His permission. He knows everything—the past, the present, and the future—while His creatures only grasp what He wills of His knowledge. The verse then mentions that His Kursi (Footstool) extends over the heavens and the earth, and that guarding them does not weary Him, for He is the Most High, the Most Great.
The Prophet ﷺ told Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that this is the greatest verse in the Quran. When Ubayy recited it, the Prophet ﷺ struck him on the chest and said: *"May knowledge be pleasant for you, O Abu al-Mundhir!"* [Sahih Muslim 810]
The Kursi mentioned in this verse is not the same as the 'Arsh (the Throne). Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) explained: *"The Kursi is the resting place of the feet, and the size of the Throne cannot be estimated."* [Ibn Khuzaymah in At-Tawheed – Authentic] The Prophet ﷺ also said: *"The Kursi in comparison to the Throne is only like an iron ring thrown in a desert on earth."* [Ibn Abi Shaybah in Al-'Arsh – Authentic] This shows us how immense Allah's creation is, and how infinitely greater Allah Himself is.
There is also a great reward for reciting this verse. The Prophet ﷺ said: *"Whoever recites the Verse of the Kursi right after each obligatory prayer will have nothing preventing him from entering Paradise except that he dies."* [An-Nasa'i in Al-Kubra – Authentic]
Practical advice: Make it a habit to recite Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer.
