Surah Al-Baqara 2:179 — translation and meaning

وَلَكُمْ فِي الْقِصَاصِ حَيَاةٌ يَاأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

حَيَاةٌ

(is) life
يَاأُولِي

O men
الْأَلْبَابِ
al-albabi
(of) understanding
لَعَلَّكُمْ
la'allakum
So that you may
تَتَّقُونَ
tattaquna
(become) righteous
Transliteration
Wa lakum fil qisaasi hayaatuny yaaa ulil albaabi la 'allakum tattaqoon
Translation
And there is for you in legal retribution [saving of] life, O you [people] of understanding, that you may become righteous.
Verse interpretation (Tafsir)
In the law of equivalent punishment decreed by Allah there is life for you, because it spares your blood, stopping further attacks between you. Those with sense understand this: who are mindful of Allah, keeping to His sacred law and doing as He instructs.
