Surah Al-Baqara 2:33 — translation and meaning

ۖ قَالَ يَاآدَمُ أَنبِئْهُم بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ فَلَمَّا أَنبَأَهُم بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَأَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ

Inform them
بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ

of their names
فَلَمَّا

بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ
bi-asmaihim
of their names

He said
أَلَمْ
alam
Did not
أَقُل
aqul
I say
لَّكُمْ
lakum
to you
إِنِّي
inni
Indeed, I
أَعْلَمُ
a'lamu
[I] know
غَيْبَ
ghayba
(the) unseen
السَّمَاوَاتِ
al-samawati
(of) the heavens
وَالْأَرْضِ
wal-ardi
and the earth
وَأَعْلَمُ
wa-a'lamu
and I know
مَا
ma
what
تُبْدُونَ
tub'duna
you reveal
وَمَا
wama
and what
كُنتُمْ
kuntum
you [were]
تَكْتُمُونَ
taktumuna
conceal

Transliteration

Qaala yaaa Aadamu ambi' hum biasmaaa'ihimfalammaaa amba ahum bi asmaaa'ihim qaala alam aqul lakum inneee a'lamu ghaibas samaawaati wal ardi wa a'lamu maa tubdoona wa maa kuntum taktumoon

Translation

He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed."

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

Then Allah told Adam to tell them the names. When Adam told the angels the names of things, as he had been taught, Allah reminded the angels that He had told them that He knew everything hidden in the heavens and the earth, and what they made public and what they said inside of themselves.
