ۚ يَدْعُو لَمَن ضَرُّهُ أَقْرَبُ مِن نَّفْعِهِ لَبِئْسَ الْمَوْلَى وَلَبِئْسَ الْعَشِيرُ

Transliteration

Yad'oo laman darruhooo aqrabu min naf'ih; labi'salmawlaa wa labi'sal 'asheer

Translation

He invokes one whose harm is closer than his benefit - how wretched the protector and how wretched the associate.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

This disbeliever who worships idols calls upon the one whose confirmed harm is closer than his absent benefit. Bad is the deity whose harm is closer than his benefit. Bad is it as a helper to one who seeks its help, and as a companion to who accompanies it.
