Surah Al-Ma'ida 5:53 — translation and meaning
المائدة · Verse 53 / 120 · Page 117
ۙ ۚ وَيَقُولُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَهَؤُلَاءِ الَّذِينَ أَقْسَمُوا بِاللَّهِ جَهْدَ أَيْمَانِهِمْ إِنَّهُمْ لَمَعَكُمْ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فَأَصْبَحُوا خَاسِرِينَ
Word by Word
Transliteration
Wa yaqoolul lazeena aamanooo ahaaa'ulaaa'il lazeena aqsamoo billaahi jahda aimaanihim innahum lama'akum; habitat a'maaluhum fa asbahoo khaasireen
Translation
And those who believe will say, "Are these the ones who swore by Allah their strongest oaths that indeed they were with you?" Their deeds have become worthless, and they have become losers.
Verse interpretation (Tafsir)
The believers will say in surprise at the condition of these hypocrites, ‘Are these the people who swore serious oaths that they were with you – O you who have faith – in faith, support and alliance?’ Their actions have gone to waste and they have become losers because they lost their true goal and because of the punishment prepared for them.
