Surah An-Nisa 4:161 — translation and meaning

النساء · Verse 161 / 176 · Page 103

ۚ وَأَخْذِهِمُ الرِّبَا وَقَدْ نُهُوا عَنْهُ وَأَكْلِهِمْ أَمْوَالَ النَّاسِ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَافِرِينَ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا

Word by Word

ۚ
وَأَخْذِهِمُ
wa-akhdhihimu
And for their taking
الرِّبَا
al-riba
(of) [the] usury
وَقَدْ
waqad
while certainly
نُهُوا
nuhu
they were forbidden
عَنْهُ
anhu
from it
وَأَكْلِهِمْ
wa-aklihim
and (for) their consuming
أَمْوَالَ
amwala
wealth
النَّاسِ
al-nasi
(of) the people
بِالْبَاطِلِ
bil-batili
wrongfully
وَأَعْتَدْنَا
wa-a'tadna
And We have prepared
لِلْكَافِرِينَ
lil'kafirina
for the disbelievers
مِنْهُمْ
min'hum
among them
عَذَابًا
adhaban
a punishment
أَلِيمًا
aliman
painful

Transliteration

Wa akhzihimur ribaa wa qad nuhoo 'anhu wa aklihim amwaalan naasi bilbaatil; wa a'tadnaa lilkaafireena minhum 'azaaban aleema

Translation

And [for] their taking of usury while they had been forbidden from it, and their consuming of the people's wealth unjustly. And we have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

And because of their dealing in usury after Allah had prohibited them from consuming it and because of their taking the wealth of people without any legitimate right. I have prepared for those of them who disbelieve a punishment causing pain.
