Surah At-Tawba 9:65 — translation and meaning

التوبة · Verse 65 / 129 · Page 197

ۚ وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ قُلْ أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ

Word by Word

ۚ
وَلَئِن
wala-in
And if
سَأَلْتَهُمْ
sa-altahum
you ask them
لَيَقُولُنَّ
layaqulunna
surely they will say
إِنَّمَا
innama
Only
كُنَّا
kunna
we were
نَخُوضُ
nakhudu
conversing
وَنَلْعَبُ
wanal'abu
and playing
قُلْ
qul
Say
أَبِاللَّهِ
abil-lahi
Is it Allah
وَآيَاتِهِ
waayatihi
and His Verses
وَرَسُولِهِ
warasulihi
and His Messenger
كُنتُمْ
kuntum
(that) you were
تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ
tastahziuna
mocking

Transliteration

Wala'in sa altahum layaqoolunna innamaa kunnaa nakhoodu wa nal'ab; qul abillaahi wa 'Aayaatihee wa Rasoolihee kuntum tastahzi'oon

Translation

And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

If you, O Messenger, ask the hypocrites about the insults they used against the believers after Allah informs you of it, they will say, ‘We were just joking when we said that and we were not serious’. Say, O Messenger, ‘Is it Allah, His verses and His Messenger that you were making fun of?’
