Here's how it works, step by step:
1. The time of Fajr
Fajr begins at the *true dawn* (al-fajr al-ṣādiq) — when a white light spreads horizontally across the horizon — and ends at sunrise. It's important to distinguish this from the *false dawn* (al-fajr al-kādhib), which appears as a vertical light like a wolf's tail and does not make the prayer valid. The Prophet ﷺ said:
> "There are two Fajrs. As for the Fajr that resembles the tail of a wolf, it is not a sign that prayer has become due... And as for the Fajr that takes a rectangular shape in the horizon, it is a sign that prayer has become due and food forbidden to consume."
> [Al-Haakim, authentic hadith — ID 10609]
2. The two Sunnah rak'ahs before Fajr
Before the obligatory prayer, it is a strongly recommended Sunnah to pray 2 short rak'ahs. The Prophet ﷺ used to pray them after the dawn broke and before the obligatory prayer. ʿĀ'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said he would pray them so briefly that she wondered whether he had even recited al-Fātiḥah. [Sahih Bukhari & Muslim — ID 11248]
3. The 2 obligatory rak'ahs
After the adhān and iqāmah, you pray the 2 obligatory rak'ahs of Fajr. In the first rak'ah, after al-Fātiḥah, it is Sunnah to recite Sūrat al-Kāfirūn; in the second, Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ (though any recitation is valid). The recitation in Fajr is done aloud by the imam in congregation, and it is recommended to lengthen it, because Allah says:
> "Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night, and [also] the recitation at dawn. Indeed, the recitation at dawn is ever witnessed."
> [Coran, Al-Isra: 78]
4. The virtue of praying in congregation
Praying Fajr in congregation carries a huge reward. The Prophet ﷺ said:
> "The congregational prayer surpasses the prayer of any one of you alone by twenty-five times. And the angels of the night and the angels of the day gather at the Fajr prayer."
> [Sahih Bukhari & Muslim — ID 11286]
This is why the verse says the recitation at dawn "is ever witnessed" — the angels of the night and the angels of the day both attend it.
5. A note on timing
If you catch even one rak'ah before sunrise, you have caught the Fajr prayer in its time. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever catches one rak'ah before sunrise, he has caught the Fajr prayer." [Sahih Bukhari & Muslim — ID 10602]
Practical tip: Set your alarm a little earlier than you think you need, and use the prayer times section of your Al Muslim Plus app to know the exact Fajr time for your location. You can also use the Qibla compass in the app to make sure you're facing the right direction before you begin. Try to pray the two Sunnah rak'ahs too — they are a treasure, and the Prophet ﷺ never left them, even while traveling.
