Da'wah (preaching) and Hisbah (enjoining good) are duties of every Muslim. These hadiths guide on how to invite people to Allah with wisdom.
Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If a person falls ill or travels, he shall be credited with whatever good deeds he used to perform while being at home and in good health."
’Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: There was a man who, as far as I know, lived farther from the mosque than anyone else, and he never missed a prayer. He said: It was said to him, or I said to him: If only you would buy a donkey so that you may ride it in the darkness and the scorching heat. He said: I do not like that my house be near the mosque, for I want the steps I take to the mosque and back from it to my family to be recorded for me. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, Allah has gathered all of that for you."
Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No Muslim plants a tree but whatever is eaten from it will be counted for him as charity, and whatever is stolen from it will be counted as charity for him, and whatever is taken from it will be counted as charity for him." Another narration reads: "No Muslim plants a tree, then a man, a beast or a bird eats from it, but it will be counted as charity for him on the Day of Judgment." Another narration states: "No Muslim plants a tree or sows a field, then a man, a beast, or anything else eats from it, but it will be counted as charity for him." These both narrations are reported from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Utbah ibn Mas‘ūd reported: I heard ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "People were judged by the divine revelation during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) but the divine revelation has ceased. Now, we only judge you by what is apparent to us from your deeds. Whoever appears to be good, we trust and honor him, and what he does in secret is no concern of ours, for Allah will judge him for what he does in secret. Whoever appears to be evil, we will not trust or believe him, even if he says that his intentions are good."
Tamīm ad-Dāri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Religion is sincerity." We said: "To whom?" He said: "To Allah, to His Book, to His Messenger, to the Muslim leaders and their common folk."
Abu Shurayh Khuwaylid ibn ‘Amr al-Khuzā‘i al-‘Adawi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he said to ‘Amr ibn Sa‘īd ibn al-‘Ās, when the latter was sending troops to Makkah (to fight ‘Abdullāh ibn Az-Zubayr): "O Commander, allow me to tell you what the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day following the Conquest of Makkah. My ears heard it, my heart understood it thoroughly, and I saw it with my own eyes when he spoke it. He glorified Allah and praised Him then said: 'It was Allah, the Almighty, and not the people, who made Makkah a sanctuary, so it is impermissible for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood in it or to cut down its trees. If someone argues that fighting in it is permissible because the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) fought in it, say to him: 'Allah gave permission to His Messenger and did not give permission to you.' Allah only gave me permission for a few hours of daytime, and its sanctity today is as it was yesterday. So, let those who are present inform those who are absent (of what I just said)." Abu Shurayh was asked: "What did he say to you?" He replied: He said: "O Abu Shurayh, I know better than you in this respect. Makkah does not give protection to a sinner, a fugitive murderer, or a thief."
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is a charity to be given for each joint of the human body every day on which the sun rises; judging justly between two is a charity, helping a man with his mount to ride on it or lift his luggage on it is a charity, the good word is a charity, every step that one takes to the prayer is a charity, and removing what is harmful from the way is a charity."
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They lead you in prayers. If they do well, then you will be rewarded; but if they make mistakes, then you will receive reward and the mistake will be theirs.”
‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying in my house: "O Allah, treat harshly those who rule over my nation with harshness and treat gently those who rule over my nation with gentleness."
Az-Zubayr ibn ‘Adiyy reported: We went to Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) and complained to him about the oppression we were suffering at the hands of Al-Hajjāj. So, Anas said: "Be patient, for no time will come but will be followed by a worse one until you meet your Lord. I heard it from your Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)."
Wā’il al-Hadrami reported: Salamah ibn Yazīd al-Ju‘fi (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), saying: O Prophet of Allah, what if we are governed by rulers who seek their rights from us and deny us our rights, what do you command us to do? He turned away from him. Then he asked him, and he turned away from him. Then he asked him for the second or third time, so Al-Ash‘ath ibn Qays pulled him, and he said: "Listen and obey, for they are only responsible for their duty, and you are responsible for your duty."
‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) say: "O Allah, treat harshly those who have any charge over my Ummah and treat them harshly, and treat gently those who have any charge over my Ummah and treat them gently."
Ma‘qil ibn Yasār (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no one whom Allah puts in a position of authority, and he dies on the day he dies while cheating those under his authority except that Allah will forbid Paradise for him."
‘Uday ibn ‘Umayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If any of you is assigned by us to a position but conceals a needle or more from us, it will amount to misappropriation and he will be called upon to restore it on the Day of Judgment." A black man from the Ansār stood up - I can still see him - and said: "O Messenger of Allah, take back your assignment from me." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What has happened to you?" The man replied: "I heard you say such-and-such." The Prophet replied: "I say that even now: Whosoever from you is appointed by us to a position, he should render an account of everything, big or small, and whatever he is given therefrom, he should take, and he should desist from taking what is unlawful."
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the religion is easy. No one overburdens himself in the religion except that he will be overwhelmed by it. So, seek uprightness (be moderate) and try to be close to it and receive the glad tidings. Seek help by worship in the Ghadwah (early morning), Rawhah (afternoon), and part of the Duljah (night)."
Abu Juhayfa Wahab ibn ‘Abdullāh reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) made a bond of brotherhood between Salmān and Abu Ad-Dardā'. Salmān paid a visit to Abu Ad-Dardā' and found his wife, Um Ad-Dardā', dressed in a shabby manner and asked her why she was in that state. She replied: "Your brother Abu Ad-Dardā' is not interested in (the pleasures of) this world." Later, Abu Ad-Dardā' came and prepared a meal for Salmān. Salmān asked Abu Ad-Dardā' to eat with him, but Abu Ad-Dardā' said: "I am fasting." Salmān said: "I am not going to eat unless you eat." So, Abu Ad-Dardā' ate with him. When it was night, Abu Ad-Dardā' got up to offer (voluntary) night prayer, but Salmān told him to sleep and Abu Ad-Dardā' slept. After sometime, Abu Ad-Dardā' again got up to pray but Salmān told him to sleep. When it was the last hours of the night, Salmān told him to get up then, and both of them offered the prayer. Salmān told Abu Ad-Dardā', "Your Lord has a right on you, your own self has a right on you, and your family has a right on you, so give everyone their due rights." Abu Ad-Dardā' came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and narrated the whole story. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Salmān has spoken the truth."
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever gives up obedience and isolates from the community and dies has died a death like that of jāhiliyyah (the pre-Islamic era of ignorance). Whoever fights under a blind banner, getting flared up for his people's pride, calling to fight for the sake of his people's pride or in support of his people's pride, and gets killed, his killing is like that of jāhiliyyah. Whoever revolts against my Ummah, killing the righteous and the wicked of them, not avoiding the believers among them and not fulfilling a covenant with those with whom he has made covenants, he does not belong to me, and I do not belong to him."
‘Arfajah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "If someone comes to you seeking to undermine your solidarity or disrupt your unity when you have agreed on one man, kill him."
Sahl ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a camel whose stomach touched to its back, so he said: “Fear Allah regarding these dumb animals. Ride them when they are fit (for riding), and eat them when they are fit (for eating).”
Sakhr ibn Wadā‘ah al-Ghāmidi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bless the early morning hours for my Ummah." Whenever the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sent a detachment or an army, he would send them at the early morning time. Sakhr was a merchant, and he used to send his merchandise at the early morning time, so he became rich and his wealth grew.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Convey from me, even if it is a single verse." Da'wah is not reserved for scholars. Every Muslim can share what they know with wisdom, patience and kindness.
