Surah Al-An'am 6:42 — translation and meaning

الأنعام · Verse 42 / 165 · Page 132

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَى أُمَمٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُم بِالْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ

Word by Word

وَلَقَدْ
walaqad
And certainly
أَرْسَلْنَا
arsalna
We sent (Messengers)
إِلَى
ila
to
أُمَمٍ
umamin
nations
مِّن
min
from
قَبْلِكَ
qablika
before you
فَأَخَذْنَاهُم
fa-akhadhnahum
then We seized them
بِالْبَأْسَاءِ
bil-basai
with adversity
وَالضَّرَّاءِ
wal-darai
and hardship
لَعَلَّهُمْ
la'allahum
so that they may
يَتَضَرَّعُونَ
yatadarra'una
humble themselves

Transliteration

Wa laqad arsalnaaa ilaaa umamim min qablika fa akhaznaahum bilbaasaaa'i waddarraaa'i la'allahum yata darra'oon

Translation

And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muhammad]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

I sent messengers to many communities before you, O Messenger, but those communities denied their messengers and turned away from what they brought. I then tried them with poverty and sickness in order for them to submit and humble themselves before their Lord.
