Surah Al-'Ankabut 29:53 — translation and meaning

العنكبوت · Verse 53 / 69 · Page 403

ۚ وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِالْعَذَابِ وَلَوْلَا أَجَلٌ مُّسَمًّى لَّجَاءَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ وَلَيَأْتِيَنَّهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Word by Word

ۚ
وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ
wayasta'jilunaka
And they ask you to hasten
بِالْعَذَابِ
bil-'adhabi
[with] the punishment
وَلَوْلَا
walawla
And if not
أَجَلٌ
ajalun
(for) a term
مُّسَمًّى
musamman
appointed
لَّجَاءَهُمُ
lajaahumu
surely (would) have come to them
الْعَذَابُ
al-'adhabu
the punishment
وَلَيَأْتِيَنَّهُم
walayatiyannahum
But it will surely come to them
بَغْتَةً
baghtatan
suddenly
وَهُمْ
wahum
while they
لَا
la
(do) not
يَشْعُرُونَ
yash'uruna
perceive

Transliteration

Wa yasta'jiloonaka bil'azaab; wa law laaa ajalum musammal lajaaa'ahumul 'zaab; wa la yaatiyannahum baghta tanw wa hum laa yash'uroon

Translation

And they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

O Messenger! The idolaters want for you to bring quickly the punishment you warned them of. Had it not been for Allah already having decreed an unmovable time for their punishment, it would definitely have come upon them. And it will come upon them suddenly, when they do not expect it to.
