Surah Al-A'raf 7:141 — translation and meaning

ۚ ۖ وَإِذْ أَنجَيْنَاكُم مِّنْ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَسُومُونَكُمْ سُوءَ الْعَذَابِ يُقَتِّلُونَ أَبْنَاءَكُمْ وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ نِسَاءَكُمْ وَفِي ذَلِكُم بَلَاءٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَظِيمٌ

وَإِذْ
wa-idh
And when
أَنجَيْنَاكُم
anjaynakum
We saved you
مِّنْ

from

(the) people
فِرْعَوْنَ
fir'awna
(of) Firaun
يَسُومُونَكُمْ
yasumunakum
who were afflicting you
سُوءَ
sua
(with) worst
الْعَذَابِ
al-'adhabi
(of) torment
يُقَتِّلُونَ
yuqattiluna
they were killing
أَبْنَاءَكُمْ
abnaakum
your sons
وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ
wayastahyuna
and letting live
نِسَاءَكُمْ
nisaakum
your women
وَفِي
wafi
And in
ذَلِكُم
dhalikum
that
بَلَاءٌ
balaon
(was) a trial
مِّن
min
from
رَّبِّكُمْ
rabbikum
your Lord
عَظِيمٌ
azimun
great

Transliteration

Wa iz anjainaakum min Aali Fir'awna yasoomoo nakum sooo'al 'azaab, yuqattiloona abnaaa'akum wa yastahyoona nisaaa'akum; wa fee zaalikum balaaa'um mir Rabbikum 'azeem

Translation

And [recall, O Children of Israel], when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, [who were] afflicting you with the worst torment - killing your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

And remember O Children of Israel, when I saved you from the humiliation of Pharaoh and his people, who were making you suffer greatly, killing your sons and letting your women live to serve them. Being saved from Pharaoh and his people was a great test from your Lord, to see if you would be thankful.
