Surah Al-Baqara 2:279 — translation and meaning

البقرة · Verse 279 / 286 · Page 47

ۖ فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُوا فَأْذَنُوا بِحَرْبٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَلَكُمْ رُءُوسُ أَمْوَالِكُمْ لَا تَظْلِمُونَ وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ

تَفْعَلُوا

you do
فَأْذَنُوا

then be informed
بِحَرْبٍ
biharbin
of a war
مِّنَ
mina
from
اللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
وَرَسُولِهِ
warasulihi
and His Messenger
وَإِن
wa-in
And if
تُبْتُمْ
tub'tum
you repent
فَلَكُمْ
falakum
then for you
رُءُوسُ
ruusu
(is)
أَمْوَالِكُمْ
amwalikum
your capital
لَا
la
(do) not
تَظْلِمُونَ
tazlimuna
wrong
وَلَا
wala
and not
تُظْلَمُونَ
tuz'lamuna
you will be wronged

Transliteration

Fail lam taf'aloo faazanoo biharbim minal laahi wa Rasoolihee wa in tubtum falakum ru'oosu amwaalikum laa tazlimoona wa laa tuzlamoon

Translation

And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

If you do not obey the sacred law, then be aware and certain of war with Allah and His Messenger. If you repent to Allah and leave usury, then you can keep the initial amount that you had given as a loan from your capital, in a manner that does not wrong anyone by taking more than your initial capital and does not wrong you by making you receive less than it.
