Surah Al-Baqara 2:55 — translation and meaning

البقرة · Verse 55 / 286 · Page 8

وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَامُوسَى لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكَ حَتَّى نَرَى اللَّهَ جَهْرَةً فَأَخَذَتْكُمُ الصَّاعِقَةُ وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ

Word by Word

وَإِذْ
wa-idh
And when
قُلْتُمْ
qul'tum
you said
يَامُوسَى
yamusa
O Musa
لَن
lan
Never
نُّؤْمِنَ
nu'mina
(will) we believe
لَكَ
laka
in you
حَتَّى
hatta
until
نَرَى
nara
we see
اللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
جَهْرَةً
jahratan
manifestly
فَأَخَذَتْكُمُ
fa-akhadhatkumu
So seized you
الصَّاعِقَةُ
al-sa'iqatu
the thunderbolt
وَأَنتُمْ
wa-antum
while you
تَنظُرُونَ
tanzuruna
(were) looking

Transliteration

Wa iz qultum yaa Moosaa lan nu'mina laka hattaa naral laaha jahratan fa akhazat kumus saa'iqatu wa antum tanzuroon

Translation

And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allah outright"; so the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

Also, remember when you shamelessly addressed Moses (peace be upon him), saying that you would not believe him until you saw Allah with your own eyes, in the open before you, and the lightning struck you and killed you, whilst some of you looked at the others.
