Surah Al-Isra 17:40 — translation and meaning

ۚ أَفَأَصْفَاكُمْ رَبُّكُم بِالْبَنِينَ وَاتَّخَذَ مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنَاثًا إِنَّكُمْ لَتَقُولُونَ قَوْلًا عَظِيمًا

Word by Word

أَفَأَصْفَاكُمْ
afa-asfakum
Then has chosen (for) you
رَبُّكُم
rabbukum
your Lord
بِالْبَنِينَ
bil-banina
sons
وَاتَّخَذَ
wa-ittakhadha
and He has taken
مِنَ
mina
from
الْمَلَائِكَةِ
al-malaikati
the Angels
إِنَاثًا
inathan
daughters
إِنَّكُمْ
innakum
Indeed, you
لَتَقُولُونَ
lataquluna
surely say
قَوْلًا
qawlan
a word
عَظِيمًا
aziman
grave

Transliteration

Afa asfaakum rabbukum bilbaneena wattakhaza minal malaaa'ikati inaasaa; innakum lataqooloona qawlan 'azeema

Translation

Then, has your Lord chosen you for [having] sons and taken from among the angels daughters? Indeed, you say a grave saying.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

O you who claim that the angels are Allah’s daughters! Has your Lord chosen you - O idolaters - to have male children, while taking for Himself daughters from among the angels? Allah is above what you are saying. You are indeed saying a terrible thing about Allah by ascribing children to him and claiming that He has daughters persisting in you disbelief.
