Surah An-Nisa 4:38 — translation and meaning

النساء · Verse 38 / 176 · Page 85

ۗ وَالَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ رِئَاءَ النَّاسِ وَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَلَا بِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَمَن يَكُنِ الشَّيْطَانُ لَهُ قَرِينًا فَسَاءَ قَرِينًا

And those who
يُنفِقُونَ

أَمْوَالَهُمْ

their wealth
رِئَاءَ

النَّاسِ

and not
يُؤْمِنُونَ

they believe
بِاللَّهِ
bil-lahi
in Allah
وَلَا

بِالْيَوْمِ

in the Day
الْآخِرِ
al-akhiri
the Last
وَمَن
waman
and whoever
يَكُنِ
yakuni
has
الشَّيْطَانُ
al-shaytanu
the Shaitaan
لَهُ
lahu
for him
قَرِينًا
qarinan
(as) companion
فَسَاءَ
fasaa
then evil
قَرِينًا
qarinan
(is he as) a companion

Transliteration

Wallazeena yunfiqoona amwaalahum ri'aaa'an naasi wa laa yu'minoona billaahi wa laa bil Yawmil Aakhir; wa mai yakunish shaitaanu lahoo qareenan fasaaa'a qareenaa

Translation

And [also] those who spend of their wealth to be seen by the people and believe not in Allah nor in the Last Day. And he to whom Satan is a companion - then evil is he as a companion.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

Allah has prepared this humiliating punishment for those who spend their wealth so that people notice them and praise them, and those who do not have faith in Allah and the Last Day. It is through following Satan that they have gone the wrong way. Whoever has Satan for a friend and companion has a terrible companion.
