Surah An-Nisa 4:73 — translation and meaning

النساء · Verse 73 / 176 · Page 89

وَلَئِنْ أَصَابَكُمْ فَضْلٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ لَيَقُولَنَّ كَأَن لَّمْ تَكُن بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ مَوَدَّةٌ يَالَيْتَنِي كُنتُ مَعَهُمْ فَأَفُوزَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا

Word by Word

وَلَئِنْ
wala-in
And if
أَصَابَكُمْ
asabakum
befalls you
فَضْلٌ
fadlun
bounty
مِّنَ
mina
from
اللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
لَيَقُولَنَّ
layaqulanna
he would surely say
كَأَن
ka-an
as if
لَّمْ
lam
(had) not
تَكُن
takun
there been
بَيْنَكُمْ
baynakum
between you
وَبَيْنَهُ
wabaynahu
and between him
مَوَدَّةٌ
mawaddatun
any affection
يَالَيْتَنِي
yalaytani
Oh! I wish
كُنتُ
kuntu
I had been
مَعَهُمْ
ma'ahum
with them
فَأَفُوزَ
fa-afuza
then I would have attained
فَوْزًا
fawzan
a success
عَظِيمًا
aziman
great

Transliteration

Wa la'in asaabakum fadlum minal laahi la yaqoolanna ka al lam takum bainakum wa bainahoo mawaddatuny yaa laitanee kuntu ma'ahum fa afooza fawzan 'azeemaa

Translation

But if bounty comes to you from Allah, he will surely say, as if there had never been between you and him any affection. "Oh, I wish I had been with them so I could have attained a great attainment."

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

If Allah’s grace of support and gains of war come to you, O Muslims, this person – who lags behind from striving in Allah’s path – says, as if there was friendship or affinity between you and him, ‘If only I was with them in that fight, I would have also gained great success’. Worldly benefits are the only goal of such a person.
