ۖ إِذْ جَاءَتْهُمُ الرُّسُلُ مِن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا اللَّهَ قَالُوا لَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّنَا لَأَنزَلَ مَلَائِكَةً فَإِنَّا بِمَا أُرْسِلْتُم بِهِ كَافِرُونَ

Transliteration

Iz jaaa'at humur Rusulu mim baini aydeehim wa min khalfihim allaa ta'budooo illal laaha qaaloo law shaaa'a Rabunaa la anzala malaaa 'ikatan fa innaa bimaaa ursiltum bihee kaafiroon

Translation

[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allah." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

When their messengers came to them, each following the other in bringing one message, instructing them to worship none other than Allah alone. The disbelievers said, “If our Lord wished to send down angels as messengers to us, He would have sent them. Therefore, we reject whatever you have been sent with, because you are humans like we are.”
