Surah Fussilat 41:17 — translation and meaning

وَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَهَدَيْنَاهُمْ فَاسْتَحَبُّوا الْعَمَى عَلَى الْهُدَى فَأَخَذَتْهُمْ صَاعِقَةُ الْعَذَابِ الْهُونِ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

فَهَدَيْنَاهُمْ

We guided them
فَاسْتَحَبُّوا

but they preferred

the guidance
فَأَخَذَتْهُمْ
fa-akhadhathum
so seized them
صَاعِقَةُ
sa'iqatu
a thunderbolt
الْعَذَابِ
al-'adhabi
(of) the punishment
الْهُونِ
al-huni
humiliating
بِمَا
bima
for what
كَانُوا
kanu
they used (to)
يَكْسِبُونَ
yaksibuna
earn

Transliteration

Wa ammaa Samoodu fahadinaahum fastahabbul 'ama 'alal huda fa akhazathum saa'iqatul 'azaabil hooni bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon

Translation

And as for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

As for the people of Saleh, the Thamūd, I guided them by making the path of truth clear to them, but they preferred deviance to guidance to the truth, so the humiliating punishment seized them because of the disbelief and sins they would commit.
