Surah Ghafir 40:58 — translation and meaning

غافر · Verse 58 / 85 · Page 473

ۚ وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْأَعْمَى وَالْبَصِيرُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَلَا الْمُسِيءُ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ

Word by Word

يَسْتَوِي
yastawi
are equal
الْأَعْمَى
al-a'ma
the blind
وَالْبَصِيرُ
wal-basiru
and the seeing
وَالَّذِينَ
wa-alladhina
and those who
آمَنُوا

believe
وَعَمِلُوا
wa'amilu
and do
الصَّالِحَاتِ
al-salihati
righteous deeds
وَلَا
wala
and not
الْمُسِيءُ
al-musiu
the evildoer
قَلِيلًا
qalilan
Little
مَّا
ma
(is) what
تَتَذَكَّرُونَ
tatadhakkaruna
you take heed

Transliteration

Wa maa yastawil a'maa walbaseeru wallazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati wa lal museee'; qaleelam maa tatazakkaroon

Translation

And not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are those who believe and do righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you remember.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

The one who cannot see and the one who can see are not equal, nor are those who have faith in Allah, accept His messengers and do good actions, equal to those who do wrong and have corrupt belief! You do not remember except a little, because if you had remembered you would have known the difference between the two groups so you could strive to be amongst those who have faith and did good deeds, seeking the pleasure of Allah.
