Surah Ghafir 40:68 — translation and meaning

ۖ هُوَ الَّذِي يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ فَإِذَا قَضَى أَمْرًا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ

يُحْيِي
yuh'yi
gives life
وَيُمِيتُ
wayumitu
and causes death
فَإِذَا
fa-idha
And when
قَضَى
qada
He decrees
أَمْرًا
amran
a matter
فَإِنَّمَا
fa-innama
then only
يَقُولُ
yaqulu
He says
لَهُ
lahu
to it
كُن
kun
Be
فَيَكُونُ
fayakunu
and it is
Transliteration
Huwal lazee yuhyee wa yumeetu fa izaa qadaaa amran fa innamaa yaqoolu lahoo kun fa yakon
Translation
He it is who gives life and causes death; and when He decrees a matter, He but says to it, "Be," and it is.
Verse interpretation (Tafsir)
He alone is the one in whose hand is giving life and He alone is the one in whose hand is giving death. So when He decides a matter, He only says to that matter: “Be” and it becomes.
