Surah Yunus 10:42 — translation and meaning

ۚ وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَسْتَمِعُونَ إِلَيْكَ أَفَأَنتَ تُسْمِعُ الصُّمَّ وَلَوْ كَانُوا لَا يَعْقِلُونَ

وَمِنْهُم
wamin'hum
And among them
مَّن
man
(are some) who
يَسْتَمِعُونَ
yastami'una
listen
إِلَيْكَ
ilayka
to you
أَفَأَنتَ
afa-anta
But (can) you
تُسْمِعُ
tus'mi'u
cause the deaf to hear
الصُّمَّ
al-suma
cause the deaf to hear
وَلَوْ
walaw
even though
كَانُوا
kanu
they [were]
لَا
la
(do) not
يَعْقِلُونَ
ya'qiluna
use reason
Transliteration
Wa minhum mai yastami'oona iliak; afa anta tusmi'us summa wa law kaanoo la ya'qiloon
Translation
And among them are those who listen to you. But can you cause the deaf to hear, although they will not use reason?
Verse interpretation (Tafsir)
And some of the idolaters listen to you O Messenger as you recite the Qur’ān not wanting to accept it and follow it. Are you able to make deaf people hear? Likewise you cannot guide those who are deaf to the truth, as they will not understand it.
