532 Hadith
Islam attaches great importance to good manners and moral virtues. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I was sent to perfect noble character."
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in Whose hand my soul is, if you were not to commit sins, Allah would replace you with people who would commit sins and then seek forgiveness from Allah, the Almighty, who would then forgive them."
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I passed by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and my lower garment was trailing. Therefore, he said: "O ‘Abdullāh, pull up your lower garment." I raised it and he said: 'Up!’ So I raised it further, and I have been doing so since then. Some people said: "Up to where?" He said: "To the middle of the shins."
‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hellfire will be brought on that Day (the Day of Resurrection) with seventy thousand bridles; and with each bridle, there will be seventy thousand angels pulling it."
Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) visited me when I was ill and said: "O Allah, cure Sa‘d; O Allah, cure Sa‘d; O Allah, cure Sa‘d!"
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to say in his prostration: "Allāhumma ighfir li dhambi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, wa awwalahu wa ākhirahu, wa ‘alāniyatahu wa sirrahu (O Allah, forgive me all my sins, the small and the great, the first and the last, the public and the private)."
‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) used to say at the end of prayer, between the Tashahhud and Taslīm: "O Allah, forgive my past and future sins, my secret and open sins, my transgression, and that of which You have better knowledge than I. Indeed, You are the One Who puts forward, and You are the One Who puts back. There is no god but You."
Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When he feared mischief from some people, he would say: "O Allah, We ask You to ward them off (from their throats), and we seek Your protection against their evil."
‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most hated person in the sight of Allah is the most quarrelsome person."
Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most beloved speech to Allah are four: subhān Allah (glory be Allah), al-hamdulillāh (praise be to Allah), la ilāha illa Allah (there is no god but Allah), and Allāhu akbar (Allah is the Most Great), and it does not matter which one of them you start with."
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the foremost deed that leads people to Paradise, and he replied: "Fear of Allah and good character." Then, he was asked about the things that most lead people to Hellfire, and he said: "The tongue and the private parts."
Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The lasting good deeds are the statements: There is no god but Allah, glory be to Allah, Allah is the greatest, praise be to Allah, there is no power or might except with Allah."
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man preaching to his brother about modesty; he said: "Modesty is part of faith."
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Supplication between the Adhān (call to prayer) and the Iqāmah (second call to prayer) is not rejected."
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "O Allah, set right for me my religion that is the safeguard of my affairs, and set right for me my world wherein my living is, and set right for me my Hereafter wherein my return is, and make life an increase for me in every good, and make death a relief for me from every evil."
Abu Mūsa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to invoke Allah with this supplication: "O Lord, forgive me my sin, my ignorance, my excess in all of my affairs, and whatever You are better aware of than me. O Allah, forgive me my sins, my deliberate sins, my ignorant sins, my humorous sins, and all of this I have committed. O Allah, forgive what I have done and what I have left undone, what I have committed secretly and what I have committed openly; You are the Advancer and You are the Delayer, and You have absolute power over everything."
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) never abandoned these supplications in the evening and the morning: "O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly life, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my imperfection—or my imperfections—and secure my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge with Your greatness from being suddenly killed from beneath me."
Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) once heard a man saying: "O Allah, I ask You by virtue of my testimony that You are Allah, there is no God but You, the One, the Eternal Refuge, Who did not beget, and was not begotten, and to Whom no one is equal." Thereupon, he: "Verily, he has asked Allah by His Name by which He gives when asked, and by which He answers when supplicated."
‘Ā’ishah, Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her), reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) taught her this supplication: "O Allah, I ask You for all that is good, the immediate and the deferred thereof, what I know and what I do not know. And I seek refuge with You from all that is evil, the immediate and the deferred thereof, what I know and what I do not know. O Allah, I ask You for the good that Your slave and Prophet asked You for, and I seek refuge with You from the evil that Your slave and Prophet sought refuge from. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and what brings one closer to it of words or deeds, and I seek refuge with You from the Fire and from what brings one closer to it of words or deeds, and I ask You to make every decree that You have decreed for me good."
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate, saying: "O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the removal of Your favor, the change of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your calamity, and all of Your wrath."
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate with these words: "O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the dominance of debt, the dominance of the enemy, and the gloat of the enemies."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) placed good behavior at the center. He said that the most complete believers in faith are those with the best character. These hadiths cover kindness, patience, generosity, honesty, respect for parents, and many other essential virtues.
