532 Hadith

Islam attaches great importance to good manners and moral virtues. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I was sent to perfect noble character."

#3729Authentic hadith· Narrated by Bukhari

‘Amr ibn Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: An amount of money, or some war captives, were brought to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which he distributed, giving some men and leaving others. He was then informed that the ones he had not given anything expressed their frustration by this. Upon that, he praised Allah, extolled him, and then said: "By Allah! I do give a man and I leave another, and the one that I leave is more beloved to me than the one that I give. However, I give to those whom I see in their hearts fear and anxiety, and as for the ones whom I do not give anything, I leave them to the richness and good that Allah has put in their hearts. One of them is ‘Amr ibn Taghlib." ‘Amr ibn Taghlib said: "By Allah, I would not exchange those words that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said (about me) for the most precious red camels."

#3733Authentic hadith· Narrated by At-Termedhy

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two eyes will not be touched by the Fire: an eye which has wept out of fear of Allah, and an eye which has spent the night guarding in the cause of Allah."

#3736Authentic hadith· Narrated by At-Termedhy - An-Nasaa’i - Narrated by Ahmad

Ka‘b ibn ‘Iyad (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Every Ummah has a trial, and the trial of my Ummah is wealth."

Usāmah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I stood at the gate of Paradise and saw that most of those who entered it were the poor and destitute. The people of means were held back, whilst the people of Hell had been ordered into the Fire. I stood by the gate of Hell, and saw that most of those who entered it were women."

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There was a man who used to give loans to people. He would say to his servant: ‘When you come to an insolvent person, overlook his debt; perhaps Allah would overlook our sins.’ So, the man met Allah (after death), and He overlooked his sins."

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "All of my Ummah may be forgiven except those who commit sin openly. One kind of committing sin openly is when one commits something during the night, then the morning comes and Allah has screened it, but he says: 'O So-and-so, last night, I did such-and-such.' Though he spent the night screened by his Lord (none knowing about his sin), in the morning he removes Allah's screen from himself."

#3757Authentic hadith· Narrated by Muslim

Al-Miqdād (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We used to set aside for the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) his share of milk, and he would come at night and offer greetings in a tone that did not disturb those who were asleep but was heard by those who were awake. So (one night), the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came and gave greetings as is he used to greet.

Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: As we were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), he asked: "Is anyone of you unable to earn a thousand good deeds every day?" One of those present asked: How can one earn a thousand good deeds? He replied: "He glorifies Allah a hundred times, a thousand good deeds will be recorded for him, or a thousand sins will be erased from his record."

‘Amr ibn ‘Awf al-Ansāri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sent Abu ‘Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrāh to Bahrain to collect the Jizyah (yearly tax), and he returned from Bahrain with money. The Ansār heard the news of Abu ‘Ubaydah's return and they gathered for the Fajr prayer with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). After he had prayed and left, the Ansār presented themselves before him. When he saw them, he smiled and said: "I believe you heard that Abu ‘Ubaydah has returned from Bahrain with something." They replied: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rejoice, and hope for that which will please you. By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you. What I fear for you is that the world expands (with lots of wealth) for you just as it did for the people before you. Then you will compete as they competed, then it will destroy you just as it destroyed them."

#3770Authentic hadith· Narrated by At-Termedhy - Narrated by Abu Daoud

Abu Juray al Hujaymi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Do not say 'Upon you be peace' for 'Upon you be peace' is the greeting of the dead."

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, there is no true life except that of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansār (Supporters) and the Muhājirah (Emigrants)."

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No son can repay the kindness of his father unless he finds him a slave and buys him and emancipates him."

Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) three days before his death saying: "Let none of you die except while having good expectations of Allah."

#3788Good hadith· Narrated by At-Termedhy & Ibn Majah

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, this world is cursed, and everything in it is cursed, except for the remembrance of Allah, what aligns with it, and a scholar or a knowledge seeker."

Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I met Ibrāhīm (Abraham) on the night I was taken for a journey, and he said: O Muhammad, convey my greetings of peace to your Ummah and tell them that Paradise has pure soil and sweet water. It is vast plain lands and its seedlings are: Subhānallāh (glory be to Allah), Al-hamdulillāh (praise be to Allah), La ilāha illallāh (there is no god but Allah), and Allāhu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)."

#3795Authentic hadith· Narrated by Bukhari

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported in that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All that is left from Prophethood is the glad tidings." They said: "What are the glad tidings?" He said: "The true good dream."

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I had gold equal to the mountain of Uhud, it would please me that I should have nothing left of it with me after the passage of three nights, except what I might retain to repay a debt."

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Richness is not the abundance of wealth. Rather, true richness is self-sufficiency."

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: My uncle Anas ibn An-Nadr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not take part in the battle of Badr; so he said: "O Messenger of Allah, I was absent from the first battle you fought against the polytheists. If Allah give me a chance to fight them, no doubt, Allah will show how (bravely) I will fight." So, on the day of the battle of Uhud, when the Muslims left their posts and were defeated, he said: "O Allah, I apologize to You for what these (i.e. his companions) have done, and I denounce what these (i.e. the polytheists) have done." Then he advanced with his sword and met Sa‘d ibn Mu‘ādh passing in front of him so he said to him: 'O Sa‘d ibn Mu‘ādh, the Paradise, by the Lord of the Ka‘bah, I smell the fragrance of Paradise near Mount Uhud." Sa‘d later said: "O Messenger of Allah, what he did was beyond my power." Anas said: "We found on his body over eighty wounds caused by swords, spears, and arrows. He was killed and mutilated by the polytheists to the extent that no one was able to recognize him except his sister, from his fingertips. We believe that the Qur'anic verse: {Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration} [Sūrat al-Ahzāb: 23] refers to him and the likes of him."

#3863Authentic hadith· Narrated by Muslim

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man said: O Messenger of Allah, I have relatives with whom I maintain kinship ties, but they sever them with me; I treat them kindly, but they mistreat me; I tolerate them, but they are intolerant with me. He said: "If you are as you say, then it is as if you are feeding them hot ashes, and you will continue to have a supporter against them from Allah as long as you continue to do this."

Good character in Islam

The Prophet (peace be upon him) placed good behavior at the center. He said that the most complete believers in faith are those with the best character. These hadiths cover kindness, patience, generosity, honesty, respect for parents, and many other essential virtues.
