Surah Al-Baqara 2:166 — translation and meaning

إِذْ تَبَرَّأَ الَّذِينَ اتُّبِعُوا مِنَ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوا وَرَأَوُا الْعَذَابَ وَتَقَطَّعَتْ بِهِمُ الْأَسْبَابُ

Transliteration

Iz tabarra al lazeenat tubi'oo minal lazeenattaba'oo wa ra awul 'azaaba wa taqatta'at bihimul asbaab

Translation

[And they should consider that] when those who have been followed disassociate themselves from those who followed [them], and they [all] see the punishment, and cut off from them are the ties [of relationship],

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

Then the leaders who were followed in disbelief will reject the weak people who followed them because of seeing the terrors and hardships of the Day of Judgement; so, all ties and means of escape will be cut off from them.
