Surah Al-Isra 17:28 — translation and meaning

وَإِمَّا تُعْرِضَنَّ عَنْهُمُ ابْتِغَاءَ رَحْمَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكَ تَرْجُوهَا فَقُل لَّهُمْ قَوْلًا مَّيْسُورًا

Word by Word

وَإِمَّا
wa-imma
And if
تُعْرِضَنَّ
tu'ridanna
you turn away
عَنْهُمُ
anhumu
from them
ابْتِغَاءَ
ib'tighaa
seeking
رَحْمَةٍ
rahmatin
mercy
مِّن
min
from
رَّبِّكَ
rabbika
your Lord
تَرْجُوهَا
tarjuha
which you expect
فَقُل
faqul
then say
لَّهُمْ
lahum
to them
قَوْلًا
qawlan
a word
مَّيْسُورًا
maysuran
gentle

Transliteration

Wa immaa turidanna 'anhumub tighaaa'a rahmatim mir rabbika tarjoohaa faqul lahum qawlam maisooraa

Translation

And if you [must] turn away from the needy awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

But if you refrain from giving these people, due to not having anything to give them, while waiting for Allah to bless you with provision, then say to them gentle and polite words such as praying for them to have abundant provision or promising to give them if Allah grants you wealth.
