ۖ وَإِذَا أَنْعَمْنَا عَلَى الْإِنسَانِ أَعْرَضَ وَنَأَى بِجَانِبِهِ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ كَانَ يَئُوسًا

الْإِنسَانِ

أَعْرَضَ

he turns away
وَنَأَى
wanaa
and becomes remote
بِجَانِبِهِ
bijanibihi
on his side
وَإِذَا
wa-idha
And when
مَسَّهُ
massahu
touches him
الشَّرُّ
al-sharu
the evil
كَانَ
kana
he is
يَئُوسًا
yausan
(in) despair

Transliteration

Wa izaaa an'amnaa 'alal insaani a'rada wa na-aa bijaani bihee wa izaa massahush sharru kaana ya'oosaa

Translation

And when We bestow favor upon the disbeliever, he turns away and distances himself; and when evil touches him, he is ever despairing.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

And when I grant man a blessing such as health and wealth, he turns away from thanking Allah and obeying Him, and moves further away out of pride. But when illness, poverty or the like befalls him, he becomes extremely despondent and hopeless of Allah’s mercy.
