Surah Ali 'Imran 3:143 — translation and meaning

آل عمران · Verse 143 / 200 · Page 68

وَلَقَدْ كُنتُمْ تَمَنَّوْنَ الْمَوْتَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن تَلْقَوْهُ فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ

(for) death

then indeed
رَأَيْتُمُوهُ
ra-aytumuhu
you have seen it
وَأَنتُمْ
wa-antum
while you (were)
تَنظُرُونَ
tanzuruna
looking on

Transliteration

Wa laqad kuntum tamannnawnal mawta min qabli an talqawhu faqad ra aitumoohu wa antum tanzuroon

Translation

And you had certainly wished for martyrdom before you encountered it, and you have [now] seen it [before you] while you were looking on.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

O believers, you wished to meet the disbelievers so that you could gain martyrdom for the sake of Allah, like your brothers did on the day of Badr, before you saw the severity and ways of death. Now on the day of Uḥud you have seen what you wished for with your own eyes.
