Surah An-Nisa 4:4 — translation and meaning

ۚ وَآتُوا النِّسَاءَ صَدُقَاتِهِنَّ نِحْلَةً فَإِن طِبْنَ لَكُمْ عَن شَيْءٍ مِّنْهُ نَفْسًا فَكُلُوهُ هَنِيئًا مَّرِيئًا

نِحْلَةً

مِّنْهُ

نَفْسًا
nafsan
(on their) own
فَكُلُوهُ

then eat it

(in) satisfaction
مَّرِيئًا

(and) ease

Transliteration

Wa aatun nisaaa'a sadu qaatihinna nihlah; fa in tibna lakum 'an shai'im minhu nafsan fakuloohu hanee'am mareee'aa

Translation

And give the women [upon marriage] their [bridal] gifts graciously. But if they give up willingly to you anything of it, then take it in satisfaction and ease.

Verse interpretation (Tafsir)

Give women their dowries with good will. Yet if they gladly give up a part of the dowry to you, of their own free will, then there is nothing to stop you enjoying it.
