How to pray Maghrib, step by step

Maghrib, the sunset prayer, has 3 rak‘ahs: the first two recited aloud, the third silently. Follow it movement by movement.

Standing towards the qibla, intention

Standing, facing the qibla (the direction of the Kaaba), form in your heart the intention of the prayer you are performing.

1st rak‘ah

  1. 1.Standing towards the qibla, intention

    Raise your hands to the level of your shoulders or ears and say “Allahu akbar”: you have entered the prayer.

    Raising the hands is a sunnah for all. For the Hanafi school this takbir is a condition of entry rather than a pillar.

    Place your right hand over your left hand.

  4. 4.Opening supplication

    Quietly say one of these supplications, as you prefer.

    Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, wa tabaraka-smuka, wa ta’ala jadduka, wa la ilaha ghayruk.

  5. 5.Al-Fatiha

    Quietly seek refuge in Allah, then recite Al-Fatiha, beginning with “Bismillah…”. At the end, say “Ameen”.

      Siraatal-lazeena an'amta 'alaihim ghayril-maghdoobi 'alaihim wa lad-daaalleen

      The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.

    A pillar for the Maliki, Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools; for the Hanafi school the obligation is to recite Qur’an, and Al-Fatiha is a duty (wajib). The Maliki school says neither the seeking of refuge nor the basmala in obligatory prayer.

  6. 6.A short surah

    Then recite a surah or a few verses, for example one of these.

    A duty (wajib) for the Hanafi school in the first two rak‘ahs, recommended for the other schools. In the 3rd and 4th rak‘ahs only Al-Fatiha is recited.

  7. 7.Bowing (ruku‘)

    Say “Allahu akbar” and bow: hands on your knees, back straight. Stay still for a moment.

    For women

    A woman keeps her body more gathered in bowing and prostration: this is what al-Shafi‘i (al-Umm) and the Maliki school recommend; other scholars describe the same posture for everyone.

    The Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools also raise the hands when bowing and rising; the Hanafi school, and the Maliki school in its best-known view, raise them only at the opening. Saying the formula three times comes from a hadith with a weak chain; once is enough.

  8. 8.Rising from bowing

    Rise saying “Sami‘Allahu liman hamidah”, then, standing straight: “Rabbana wa lakal-hamd”.

    Allah hears the one who praises Him.

    For the Hanbali school, someone praying behind an imam says only “Rabbana wa lakal-hamd”.

  9. 9.Prostration (sujud)

    Say “Allahu akbar” and prostrate on seven parts of the body: the forehead with the nose, both hands, both knees and the toes of both feet. Stay still for a moment.

    A woman keeps herself more gathered, arms close to the body and stomach close to the thighs, according to al-Shafi‘i and the Maliki school; other scholars describe the same posture for everyone.

  10. 10.Sitting between the two prostrations

    Rise saying “Allahu akbar” and sit on your left leg, staying still for a moment.

    Say “Allahu akbar” and prostrate again, as the first time.

    Greetings, prayers and good things are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

3rd rak‘ah

    Sitting is obligatory for all schools. Reciting the tashahhud is a pillar for the Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools, a duty (wajib) for the Hanafi school, a sunnah for the Maliki school. The Maliki school sits on the left hip in every sitting; the Hanbali school only in the final tashahhud of 3- and 4-rak‘ah prayers.

  8. 27.Blessings on the Prophet ﷺ

    Still seated, send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ (the Ibrahimi prayer).

    Allahumma salli ’ala Muhammadin wa ’ala ali Muhammad, kama sallayta ’ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik ’ala Muhammadin wa ’ala ali Muhammad, kama barakta ’ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid.

    O Allah, send Your grace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your grace upon the family of Abraham; You are indeed Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed the family of Abraham; You are indeed Praiseworthy, Glorious.

  9. 28.A supplication before the salam

    Seek Allah’s protection from four things, then, if you wish, make any supplication you like.

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ القَبْرِ، وَمِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ، وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ المَحْيَا وَالمَمَاتِ، وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ المَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

    Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min ’adhabil-qabr, wa min ’adhabin-nar, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min fitnatil-masihid-dajjal.

    O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, the punishment of the Fire, the trials of life and death, and the trial of the False Messiah (ad-Dajjal).

  10. 29.The final salam

    Turn your head to the right saying “As-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah”, then to the left saying the same. The prayer is complete.

    The Maliki school gives only one salam, to the right, when praying alone or leading; for the Hanbali school both salams are obligatory.

  11. 30.After the prayer

    Stay seated for a few moments for the remembrances after prayer.

    أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ (×3) اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ، وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ، تَبَارَكْتَ ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ

    Astaghfirullah (3 times). Allahumma antas-salam, wa minkas-salam, tabarakta dhal-jalali wal-ikram.

    I seek Allah’s forgiveness (3 times). O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of majesty and honour.

    سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ (×33) — الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (×33) — اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ (×33) لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

    Subhanallah (33), alhamdulillah (33), Allahu akbar (33), then: la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ’ala kulli shay’in qadir.

    Glory be to Allah; praise be to Allah; Allah is the Greatest; then: there is no god but Allah alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things.
