#4527Authentic hadith· Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim

Abu ‘Ubayd, the ex-slave of Ibn Az'har, reported: I witnessed Eid with ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: These are two days that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting: the day of breaking your fast, and the other day in which you eat from your sacrifice.

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās and Al-Miswar ibn Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) were at Al-Abwā' when they disagreed over a matter. Ibn ‘Abbās said: "The one in the state of Ihrām may wash his head." Al-Miswar said: "He may not wash his head." Ibn ‘Abbās sent me (the narrator) to Abu Ayyūb al-Ansāri (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask him about that. I found him taking a ritual bath between the two posts of a well, screened with a cloth. I greeted him and he said: "Who is that?" I replied: "‘Abdullāh ibn Hunayn. ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās sent me to ask you how the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to wash his head while in the state of Ihrām. Abu Ayyūb put his hand on the cloth and lowered it until I could see his head, then he said to the person who was pouring out the water for him: 'Pour', and he poured some over his head. He passed his hands over his head from back to front then from front to back and said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) washing it like this." Another narration adds: So Al-Miswar said to Ibn ‘Abbās: "I will never argue with you again."

Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We came with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while we were pronouncing Talbiyah for Hajj, but the Messenger of Allah commanded us; so we made it ‘Umrah.'

‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever dies while still having some fasts to make up for, his heir should fast on his behalf."

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died in a state that she had to observe the fast of a month. Should I complete it on her behalf?" Thereupon he said: "Would you not pay the debt if your mother had died without paying it?" He said: 'Yes.' He said: "The debt of Allah is more worthy of being repaid." Another narration states that a woman came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my mother passed away and she took an oath to fast, should I fast on her behalf?" He said: "Tell me, if there was a debt due on your mother and you settled it, would it be enough?" She replied: 'Yes.' He said: "So, fast on behalf of your mother."

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) delivering a sermon at ‘Arafāt, in which he said: "Whoever does not find slippers or sandals (Na‘l) may wear leather socks (Khuff), and whoever does not find a waist sheet (Izār) may wear pants (Sirwāl).' He meant the pilgrim in the state of Ihrām."

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no compensation for one killed or wounded by an animal or by falling in a well or because of working in a mine, and one fifth is due on the buried treasure."

Safiyyah bint Huyai (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was once observing I‘tikāf, so I went to visit him at night. We talked for a while then I got up to leave. He got up with me to escort me - her dwelling was in the house of Usāmah ibn Zayd. Two men from the Ansār passed by. When they saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) they quickened their pace, so he said to them: "Slow down. This is Safiyyah bint Huyai (my wife)." They said: "Subhān Allah! O Messenger of Allah," meaning: You are far above any suspicion. He said: "The devil circulates in the son of Adam like blood. I feared lest he should cast evil thoughts in your hearts (or he said: would cast something in your hearts)." Another narration reads: "Safiyyah came to visit him while he was observing I‘tikāf in the mosque during the last ten nights of Ramadan. So she stayed to talk to him for some time then got up to leave. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) got up to escort her until she reached the door of the mosque near Umm Salāmah's door..." Then the rest of the narration was reported with the same meaning.

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): "Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka la sharīka laka labbayk, inna al-hamda wa an-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk, la sharīka lak." (O Allah, I respond to Your call, I do respond. I respond to Your call, You have no partner, I do respond. Verily, praise, blessing, and sovereignty belong to You; You have no partner) He said: ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) used to add: Labbayka labbayka, wa sa‘dayka, wa al-khayru biyadayk. Labbayka wa ar-raghbā’u ilayka wa al-‘amal (I respond to Your call, I respond to Your call, and I ask You to make me happy.) Goodness is in Your Hands. I respond to Your call, and to You belong desires and actions).

‘Abdullāh ibn Ma‘qil reported: I sat with Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah and asked him about the ransom and he replied: "It (the verse) was revealed concerning my case specifically, but it is also meant for you in general. I was carried to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and lice were falling on my face. He said: ‘I never thought your ailment has reached such an extent. Can you afford a sheep (as a ransom for shaving your head)?’ I replied: ‘No.’ He then said: ‘Fast three days, or feed six poor people.'" In another narration: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to either feed six people three Sā‘ (each will take half a Sā‘), slaughter a sheep as a sacrifice, or fast three days."

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions arrived at Makkah assuming Ihrām for Hajj on the fourth day (of Dhu al-Hijjah). The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to assume their Ihrām for ‘Umrah (instead of Hajj). They asked: "O Messenger of Allah, to what extent should we lift the restrictions of Ihrām?" He said: "Lift the restrictions of Ihrām completely."

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: My close friend (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) advised me with three: fasting three days of every month, the two Rak‘ahs of Duha, and performing Witr before I sleep."

‘Urwah ibn Az-Zubayr reported that while he was sitting, ‘Usāmah ibn Zayd was asked: "How did the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) travel (from ‘Arafah to Muzdalifah during Hajj)?" He said: "He would ride at a moderate pace, but when he saw a gap (in the crowd), he would hurry to fill it."

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seek out the Night of Qadr (Decree) in the odd nights of the last ten of Ramadan."

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best (voluntary) fast in the sight of Allah is the fast of Dawūd, and the best (voluntary) prayer in the sight of Allah is the prayer of Dawūd. He used to sleep half of the night, stand to pray one third of it, and then sleep one sixth of it, and he used to fast every other day."

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was told that I had said: "By Allah, I will fast every day and pray every night for as long as I live." The Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "Are you the one who said that?" I said: "Yes, I said it; by my father, you and my mother." He said: "You would not be able to do that. So fast and break your fast, pray and sleep. Fast for three days a month. The reward of a good deed is multiplied by ten, so the fasting of three days a month equals the fasting of a year." I said: "I can do (fast) more than this." He said: "Fast one day every three days." I said: "I can do more than that." He said: "Fast every other day; this was the fasting of Dawūd and the best form of fasting." I said: "I can do better than that." He said: "There is nothing better than that." In another narration, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no fasting superior to the fast of my brother Dawūd; fasting half of one's life by fasting one day and eating one day."

‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Five animals are vicious and harmful and are to be killed (even) inside the Sacred Precincts: the crow, the kite, the scorpion, the mouse, and the mordacious dog." Another narration reads: "Five evil things are to be killed inside the Sacred Precincts and outside them."

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what kind of clothes should a Muhrim wear?" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "He should not wear a shirt, a turban, trousers, a hooded cloak, or leather socks except if he cannot find sandals; he may wear leather socks after cutting them to make them lower than the ankles. And he should not wear clothes scented with saffron or Wars (kinds of scents)." The narration of Al-Bukhāri adds: "and a woman should not wear a face cover or gloves."

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: Some men among the Companions of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) were shown the Night of Qadr in their dreams to be in the last seven. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I see that your visions have agreed on the last seven, so, whoever seeks it, let him seek it in the last seven."

#4546Authentic hadith· Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim

‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the night approaches from this side, and the day retreats from that side, then it is time for the fasting person to break his fast."
